ZERO WASTE IN MALAYSIA

August 1st 2018 marked this year’s Overshoot day. This means that we have used a year’s worth of what the earth can renew. It’s like consuming 1.7 earths every year. That’s why we are practicing zero waste in Malaysia to contribute to the global zero waste approach. It is time we start taking the future of our beloved earth in our hands. After all, there is no Planet B for us.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better it’s not”
-Dr Seuss

So, what is zero waste?

Zero waste is the act of wasting little to absolutely NOTHING. So it works in the order of Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and then Compost. To have our waste managed in such a way that everything is repurposed and given another life. We have been practicing zero waste in Malaysia for quite some time now. Would you like to join us?

The Main Goal?

The main goal is to not send anything into landfills and to be conscious in what is sustainable and what isn’t. Therefore, the 6 Rs should always be executed, with recycling being the last as only 10% of 300 million tons of plastic is actually recycled while millions more bleed into our oceans killing our marine life.

So what Is so Bad about Plastic Waste?

A single plastic product can take up to 1000 years to biodegrade. On top of that, the harmful chemicals from plastic seeps into soil and the ocean. As a plastic bag breaks down it does not actually disappear, in fact they just become smaller pieces of plastic called micro plastic which are no longer than 5mm.
This is where the scary part begins, whatever goes into the earth comes right back to you. The Fishes we eat swallow micro plastic all the time, therefore, you’re consuming toxic without even without knowing it.

What else can you do?

Other than reducing or completely eliminating plastic from your life, you should consume food in a minimal way and make sure it is from a sustainable source as our global crisis does’t just revolve around pollution but also over consumption of what earth can really provide. Also, only buy clothes made from natural fibres and repurpose old clothes, as synthetic clothing has a similar impact to out environment as plastic products.
