Our Story
We start practicing Zero Waste at Home and found out there were no place to shop in bulk in Kuala Lumpur.
From a single shop in a townhouse back in 2016, we have developed our capacities to pursue our committed journey towards reducing waste and inspiring sustainable practices with as many people as we could. Today, we have 5 outlets in Bangsar, Ampang, Petaling Jaya, Intermark and TTDI.
Who We Are?
Known as The Hive Bulk Foods, we were the first zero waste store in Malaysia (and here’s how we started) offering the largest bulk whole foods option, also cleaning products and anything you may need at home. We also provide a wide selection of eco-friendly personal care and lifestyle products.
The Hive caters to individuals with different preferences including people who are vegans, gluten intolerant, health conscious, zero waster and/or minimalist.
You are welcome to buy as little or as much as you like, or just what you need from our stores, kiosks or online. Just remember to bring your own containers and bags!
Our Fundamentals
Advocating a Zero waste lifestyleAs a pioneer zero waste store in Malaysia, we are determined to encourage sustainable living for the betterment of our planet. We believe that practicing the 5 R’s (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot) is a great way to minimize waste. But why is it so important?
China’s waste ban has turned Malaysia into an alternative dumping ground for many countries. In 2019, Malaysia has been rated as one of the world’s worst countries for plastic pollution! While local government is trying to cut off illegal plastic imports, we as an individual should be aware of the amount of trash we produce everyday to combat this issue.
At The Hive, we provide solutions to refuse and reduce packaging. We work hand in hand with our suppliers to reduce packaging for our delivery, we maximise recycling and upscaling of any box, bottle, jar and bag we end up with. Our product range are reusable, washable, and some compostable. We encourage you to bring your own reusable packaging (bottles, containers and bags). Besides, we use donated jars and boxes to pack for shipping too.
Supporting Local CauseAs a social enterprise, we partner with local organic farmers, women entrepreneurs, refugees and other social enterprises. Each time you purchase the refugee handmade products, you are contributing to charity. We believe it’s important to collaborate with local businesses in order to create a more tangible social impact. Besides, we run various weekly workshops as an easy step-by-step guide to eco-friendly living.
At The Hive, we accept preloved clothes, old prescription glasses, jars, paper bags and e-waste which will be collected by our partners for recycling purposes.
Our Milestone
In 2017, we received the United Nations award for our dedication in advocating a zero-waste lifestyle, for taking significant measures to reduce our environmental footprint and incorporate sustainable practices in our business operations.
In 2019, Claire Sancelot, our founder, was invited to speak at the prestigious National Geographic Summit in Portugal. She has also given TED Talks on how anyone can live zero waste and save the environment.
Since the beginning, Claire Sancelot has always been dedicated to share her experience making her voice heard across different platforms, be it at events, schools, conferences, broadcast channels and more.
So, What Is Zero Waste?
Zero waste is the act of producing little to absolutely no trash. So it works in the order of 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and Rot). The main idea is to have our waste managed in such a way, that everything is repurposed and given another life. We have been practicing zero waste in Malaysia for quite some time now.
